The Occasional Masthead

While reading an entry at Teal Sunglasses about the fun involved with kickback on a tablesaw, I notice that Chuq had an entry where he lists 8 things to know

It’s rather a neat idea. Hence, eight things to know about me.

1. The only computers I’ve ever owned (since 1984) have been Apples
2. I spend way too much time in front of a keyboard
3. I have no patience for fools
4. If the day was 36 hours long, the extra 12 would be taken up with reading
5. I play woodwinds
6. I enjoy teaching
7. I play with swords
8. I was an Army brat

So yesterday I couldn’t get my new external firewire drive to mount. Hmm. Googled here, googled there, googled everywhere. Tried different sequences of powering up, powering off, plugging and unplugging. Tried repairing permissions. Waved a dead chicken over it.

Then I noticed that one of the switches on my powerboard was turned to “off”…

Definitely an example of unintended consequences. The case has got a blue light which indicates when it’s connected to something (beside being cool). The only problem is that the blue light must draw its power over the firewire connection, and hence will light up when there’s no power to the disk itself. Somebody didn’t quite think that one through, did they.
