New Toys

Wherein Robert finds some new toys to play with.

One reason that I‘m seriously considering MovableType is the ability to plug things in to extend it. Brad Choate's MT-Textile and John Gruber‘s SmartyPants apparently do a smashing job of making sure that your MT-generated blog stays typographically elegant and correct, and look like they are worth playing with.

One thing I‘m not sure about with MT is whether you have to use, or can use, an external editor or whether the entries are all edited via a web interface. If an external editor can be used, I now have my eye on Hydra. I only found out today that it (a) does syntax coloring for about a thousand different languages, including HTML, and (b) does its own HTML previews through the juicy sweetness of WebCore . I‘ve only just downloaded it, and already I think I‘m in love. BBedit Lite may finally be retired.

John Gruber has also written a nifty AppleScript to work with BBedit though that I‘m going to go and play with. It grabs HTML from a URL and shoves the result into BBedit – sort of “View Source” after being hit by gamma rays and bloating up into an 18-foot tall green smashing machine.
