Things Medieval — Sundry items

This page shows various artefacts which don’t fit neatly into any other categories. Many of them are the small extras that can really dress up an encampment or stall. The items shown below are made of various recycled hardwoods or plantation pine, but can be made up in virtually any timber.

Portable Holes

Everyone needs portable holes. There are various ways of doing this, but the solution I‘ve shown here has the double advantage that it can be used indoors, or held down outdoors with quite small tent pegs, while remaining innocuous enough not to be a glaring anachronicity. The hole is intentionally larger than the pole that it is holding up so that the angle can be adjusted using the wedges which hold the pole firmly, to cater for sloping ground.

Signs

A common feature of many images of market places and camps are a variety of ways of suspending small signs, lamps, or goods for sale. The simple reinforced “L” shape below is perfect for hanging a sign or small shield from, as is made with period pegged joints.

A slightly different style of sign is this "shrine" type, in this case with a container for A5 sized brochures.
